Safety Coordinators

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at Farmingdale State College has collaborated with key stakeholders, including the President and Vice President of the College, Department Chairs and Deans, Operations Systems Managers and Supervisors, among others, to effectively create a team of Safety Coordinators who represent their respective departments. These Safety Coordinators exist to assist the various campus departments navigate and understand their responsibilities under Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety laws and regulations. They also aim to serve as a conduit to voice their concerns or raise questions regarding environmental health and safety matters, or the concerns and/or questions of their respective departments, directly to the EHS Office. Ultimately, the Safety Coordinators have a primary role of supporting their respective departments to meet regulatory responsibilities and internal policies and procedures.

From laboratory waste management to fluorescent light bulb recycling, potential hazardous exposures to everything from asbestos to blood borne pathogens, campus activities and operations are subject to numerous federal and state regulations. These Safety Coordinators strive to communicate what standards apply and why – making a sometimes complicated set of rules and regulations easier to comprehend and implement. Issues and concerns brought up through and to them will hopefully serve as guiding tools for further enhancing the Environmental Health and Safety programs already established on campus, as well as providing direction on new programs and policies that need to be developed.

The Safety Coordinators are generally tasked with three general categories of laws and regulations:

  1. Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention
  2. Occupational Health and Safety
  3. Hazard Communication and Right-to-Know

For more information, or how to get involved, please contact Jeff Carter, Environmental Health & Safety Officer.
