The CAST offers on-campus employment opportunities to Farmingdale State College students who are currently enrolled at least half part-time. Please see the position overviews posted below.
Peer Tutors provide high-quality tutoring for the Center for Academic Success & Tutoring (CAST). The ideal Peer Tutor is friendly and approachable, responsible and reliable, organized and efficient, and can work with a diverse student body while always maintaining a professional demeanor. The ideal candidate should also have solid interpersonal communication skills with a genuine desire to assist fellow students. Peer Tutors work directly with students to help them clarify course concepts and materials, develop effective ways to learn the material, share learning resources and study strategies, and provide general course-related guidance. The tutor may also help with special tutoring-related projects or other duties as assigned by the Director.
Job duties:
- Conducting individual or small group tutoring sessions
- Working directly with students to assist them with mastering their coursework
- Being accurate, effective, and professional while tutoring
- Preparing relevant materials for tutoring sessions
- Maintaining punctuality with appointments and assigned tutoring hours for the semester
- Ensuring tutoring session-related records are accurately documented and submitted
- Adhering to and enforcing the Center’s policies and procedures
- Respecting the private nature of tutoring sessions
- Communicating with staff promptly
- Partaking in staff meetings, training workshops, and the employee evaluation process
- Participating in class visits, department meetings, or other outreach activities
- Additional duties/responsibilities/projects may be assigned as needed by the Director
Minimum required qualifications:
- Must be an FSC student who is currently enrolled at least half part-time
- Must have at least a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher attained at FSC
- Must have completed each course they wish to tutor with an A- or better
- Must obtain faculty recommendation for each course they wish to tutor
- Must be able to commit to an assigned weekly tutoring schedule for the semester
- Must be in good academic and judicial standing
Preferred qualifications:
- Prior tutoring experience in an individual or small group setting
- Must be sensitive to the student's needs and able to communicate and relate well with fellow students
- An understanding of diverse learning styles and the ability to convey the material utilizing different approaches/methods
- Solid technology skills, including specialty software used in courses
Additional information:
- Tutors should have between 6 to 8 hours of availability per week for the entire semester, with at least two consecutive hours per shift. These hours will remain constant for the entire semester.
- Tutoring positions are available as College Work-Study or Student Assistant.
Spring 2025 Hourly Rate: $17.50/hr
Students are welcome to apply for whichever course they have successfully completed and are qualified to tutor. However, priority will be given to fill anticipated vacancies in the following courses/subjects: Biology (A&P 123, 166, 170, & 171), Biology 221/318, Chemistry (General Chem 152 & 153), Construction Mgmt/Civ. Engingeering (CIV/CON 106, CIV/CON 207, CON 161, & CON 162), Dental Hygiene (106, 108, 126), Nursing (100, 114, 217), and Physics (135 & 136).
Please be advised: the Center does not offer tutoring in English/Writing or Mathematics. Students interested in tutoring those subjects should contact the Writing Center or Math Center for more information.
Student Success Coaches provide high-quality academic success coaching for the Center for Academic Success & Tutoring. The ideal Student Success Coach is friendly and approachable, responsible and reliable, organized and efficient, and can work with a diverse student body while maintaining a professional demeanor. The ideal candidate should also have solid interpersonal communication skills with a genuine desire to assist fellow students.
Unlike Peer Tutors who help students with specific course-related content, Student Success Coaches assist with developing academic success strategies for use in any course. Although Student Success Coaches are not academic advisors and cannot formally advise on which courses to take, they can provide a unique perspective from a student’s point of view on many different facets of college life. The coach may also help with special projects or other duties as assigned by the Director.
Job duties:
- Coaching students in academic success topics (time management, note-taking, etc.).
- Developing success resources that can be utilized by others
- Leading or co-facilitating student success-themed activities or workshops
- Being accurate, effective, and professional while coaching
- Maintaining punctuality with appointments and assigned hours for the semester
- Preparing relevant materials for upcoming appointments
- Ensuring coaching session-related records are accurately documented and submitted
- Adhering to and enforcing the Center’s policies and procedures
- Respecting the private nature of coaching sessions
- Communicating with staff promptly
- Partaking in staff meetings, training workshops, and the employee evaluation process
- Participating in class visits, department meetings, or other outreach activities
- Additional duties/responsibilities/projects may be assigned as needed by the Director
