Math Placement Test

About the Math Placement Test

The Math Placement Test is administered via Accuplacer, a computerized test, and proctored by staff from the Tutoring Center. Math tests are only offered on-campus in the Tutoring Center (Greenley Hall, Room 302), and students receive up to 1 hour to complete the test in one sitting. Students will be required to answer 20 multiple-choice questions. The use of calculators is not permitted unless an accessibility accommodation was approved by the Disability Services Center (DSC) before the test date.

Prior to the test, students are strongly encouraged to view the General Placement Testing Information page for further information. To prepare for Accuplacer, students may complete free Accuplacer sample questions. Please note: there are three different Math tests available. At the start of the test, two background screening questions will determine which single test will be administered based on the most recent math course passed in the last five years as well as the highest level math course needed at Farmingdale State College. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they prepare for the correct test.

  • Arithmetic Test: administered to students who have not passed a Math course in the last five years or passed Algebra I and are looking to enroll in College Algebra (MTH 116), MTH 117/129 (Pre-calculus), or MTH 130/150 (Calculus). It is also administered to students who only need to complete College Algebra (MTH 116) or below, regardless of prior Math history.

  • Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) Test: administered to students who have passed an Algebra 2 course in the last five years and are looking to enroll in MTH 117/129 (Pre-calculus) or MTH 130/150 (Calculus). It is also administered to students who have passed a Pre-calculus course in the last 5 years and are looking to enroll in MTH 117/129 (Pre-calculus).

  • Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF) Test: administered to students who have passed a Pre-calculus course in the last five years and are looking to enroll in Calculus (MTH 130/150).

Students who wish to use the built-in test accessibility features view the Accuplacer Accessibility Wizard Tutorial.
