Academic Coaching

Program Overview:

The Academic Coaching program, offered by the Tutoring Center, is designed to provide students with the skills, tools, and resources necessary to succeed at Farmingdale State College. Student Success Coaches are high-achieving students who have demonstrated proficiency in navigating campus resources and mastering the rigors of college-level work.

Unlike tutors who help students with specific course-related content, Student Success Coaches assist with developing academic success strategies for use in any course. By working with a coach, students can receive guidance and work towards improving their skills in time management, organization, note-taking, studying, communicating with faculty, and more.

Although Student Success Coaches are not academic advisors and cannot formally advise on which courses to take, they can provide a unique perspective from a student’s point of view on many different facets of college life.

This program is available to all FSC students, regardless of major, free of charge.

  • Provide students with the skills necessary to succeed academically
  • Help students become more aware of and utilize campus resources
  • Develop a sense of camaraderie amongst peers and a connection to the campus community
  • Foster the intellectual and personal development of both the coach and student

Students may meet with a Student Success Coach to work on any of the following topics:

  • College “101” basics and using campus resources
  • Learning how to learn
  • Effective time management
  • Organization strategies
  • Note-taking skills
  • Setting realistic goals
  • Strategic studying
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Maintaining motivation and self-discipline while studying

Please see below for the appointment policy.

  • All appointments are created using the Bookings scheduling system. Any appointment requests sent via e-mail will not be accepted.

  • Appointments should be booked at least 24 hours in advance and may be scheduled up to 2 weeks (14 days) in advance.

  • Depending on coach availability, some walk-ins (appointments made less than 24 hours in advance) may be accommodated, but cannot be guaranteed. Walk-ins may not be for the full duration of a typical coaching session depending on the coach's availability.

  • Appointments are available in-person or remotely, and students must specify their preference when booking the appointment. Last minute requests to switch the modality may not be accommodated.

  • Coaching sessions are generally capped at 60 minutes (1 hour).

  • Coaching is only available to currently enrolled FSC students.

  • Students are only permitted one (1) coaching appointment per day.

    • Back-to-back (double) coaching appointments are not permitted and will be cancelled by the Center's staff.

  • Students who need to cancel or reschedule an appointment should do so at least 12 hours prior to their session by contacting the Tutoring Center staff during normal business hours at 934-420-2066 or e-mailing TutoringCenter@farmingdale.edu.

    • Students who cancel appointments in excess will receive a warning notice from the Center staff and may be prohibited from scheduling additional appointments for the remainder of the semester.

  • Students who fail to arrive within the first 15 minutes of their appointment without notifying the staff will have their session cancelled and marked as a “No-show”.

    • Students who are marked as a "No-show" will forfeit their appointment and will not be permitted to schedule a “walk-in”.

    • After two "No-show" incidents, students will receive a warning notice. Any subsequent no-shows will result in the student being prohibited from scheduling any additional appointments for the remainder of the semester.
