If you experience a work-related injury or illness, it is important to report the incident promptly and follow the appropriate procedures to ensure your workers' compensation claim is processed correctly.

What to Do If You're Injured at Work

  1. Seek medical attention if needed and inform your provider that the injury is work-related.
  2. Report the injury to your supervisor.
  3. Contact the NYS Workers' Compensation Program at 1-888-800-0029.
  4. Complete an accident report through the Health and Wellness Center.
  5. Follow all reporting and documentation requirements.

Parental and Child Care Leave 

Eligible employees may be entitled to leave related to the birth, adoption, or placement of a child. This resource provides information about available leave options, eligibility requirements, and planning considerations for employees welcoming a new addition to their family.

Paid Family Leave (PFL)

New York State Paid Family Leave (PFL) provides eligible employees with job-protected, paid time off to:

  • Bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child
  • Care for a family member with a serious health condition
  • Assist family members during certain military-related situations

Paid Parental Leave (PPL)

New York State will provide 12 weeks of Paid Parental Leave for executive branch state employees to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child. Eligible employees may take leave with pay (no charge to accruals) for up to 12 weeks for each qualifying event, defined as the birth of a child or placement of a child for adoption or foster care. PPL is available for use once every 12-month period. 


Family Medical Leave (FMLA)

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal program that provides eligible employees with job-protected leave for qualifying family and medical reasons.

Common reasons for FMLA leave include:

  • A serious personal health condition
  • Caring for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition
  • The birth or adoption of a child
  • Certain military family circumstances

Depending on the type of leave requested, employees may be required to submit supporting documentation, medical certifications, or other forms before leave can be approved.

Benefits While on Leave
Health insurance, retirement contributions, and other benefits may be affected during certain types of leave. Employees are encouraged to consult with Human Resources to understand how their benefits may be impacted.

Returning to Work
Some leave programs may require medical clearance, fitness-for-duty certification, or other documentation before returning to work. Employees should coordinate with Human Resources prior to their anticipated return date.

How do I know which type of leave I should request? 

The appropriate leave program depends on your circumstances. Employees may be eligible for Parental and Child Care Leave, Paid Family Leave (PFL), Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), or other leave programs. If you're unsure which option applies, contact Human Resources for guidance.

Can I be eligible for more than one leave program? 

Yes. In some situations, employees may qualify for more than one type of leave. Human Resources can help determine what programs may be available and how they interact.

Do I need to provide documentation when requesting leave? 

Some leave programs require supporting documentation, such as medical certifications, proof of a qualifying event, or other records. Documentation requirements vary by leave type.

How far in advance should I request leave? 

When possible, employees should notify their supervisor and Human Resources as early as possible. Advance planning helps ensure timely review of eligibility, documentation requirements, and benefit impacts.

Will my benefits continue while I am on leave? 

The impact on health insurance, retirement contributions, and other benefits may vary depending on the type and duration of leave. Employees should contact Human Resources to understand how their benefits may be affected.

Paid Parental Leave vs. Paid Family Leave


Paid Parental Leave (PPL):

  • Employees paid at full pay (100%) with no charge to accruals
  • Available to all University employees who meet the eligibility requirements
  • Must be used within 7 months of the birth, adoption, or foster care placement
  • Must be used continuously

 Paid Family Leave (PFL):

  • Employees paid at about 67% of normal salary by a separate insurance company. Accruals are not charged during PFL
  • Only available to UUP and M/C employees
  • Must be used within 1 year of the birth, adoption, or foster care placement
  • Can be used continuously or intermittently
