Farmingdale State College Auditing Program
Farmingdale State College supports lifelong learning by allowing eligible individuals to audit select credit-bearing courses through the Farmingdale Institute for Lifelong Learning (FILL). Auditing provides an opportunity to attend approved courses for personal enrichment without receiving academic credit, a grade, or transcript notation.
Auditing is available only for courses that have been approved for auditing for that semester and only when space is available after degree-seeking students have had priority access to registration.
AUDITING APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN IN:
On Monday, August 3rd at 9:00am
What Does It Mean to Audit a Course?
Auditing means attending a course as a non-credit participant. Auditors may attend
class and engage in the learning experience, but they are not enrolled for academic
credit and do not receive a grade.
Audited courses:
- Do not count toward degree requirements.
- Do not appear on a transcript.
- Do not provide academic credit or academic standing.
- Are intended primarily as a passive learning experience.
In most cases, auditors attend class but are not expected to submit assignments, take exams, or complete graded coursework. Instructors may allow additional participation, such as discussion or assignments, when expectations are clearly communicated in advance.
Each semester, Farmingdale State College departments identify which courses may be made available for auditing. All approved auditable courses can be found on this list. Courses not included on the approved list are not available for auditing.
Please note that this list indicates the last time the seats available were updated.

COURSE AUDITING AGREEMENT
Before an auditor can be enrolled in any course, they must complete and sign a Course Auditing Agreement through FILL. This agreement is intended to ensure that auditors clearly understand the nature of auditing at Farmingdale State College, and that expectations are consistent across courses and departments.
By signing the agreement, the auditor acknowledges that auditing is a non-credit learning experience and confirms their understanding that:
- Auditing does not result in academic credit, a grade, or transcript notation.
- Auditors are not enrolled as degree-seeking students and do not earn course-related academic standing.
- Auditors are typically not expected to complete graded assignments, submit coursework, or take exams unless an instructor explicitly permits or requests participation in advance.
- Auditors are expected to follow classroom expectations and maintain respectful, professional conduct at all times.
The signed agreement must be on file with FILL prior to registration. Unless otherwise specified, the agreement applies to all audited courses for that semester. A copy of this agreement will be sent to the instructor. This course will be apart of the Auditing Application.
INSTRUCTOR AUTHORITY AND DISMISSAL
Auditing is a privilege and is intended to support lifelong learning while maintaining a positive and productive classroom environment. Instructors retain the authority to manage their classroom and may request that an auditor be removed from a course if the auditor’s presence becomes disruptive or inconsistent with course expectations.
An instructor may request dismissal of an auditor for reasons including, but not limited to:
- Disruptive behavior or repeated interference with instruction.
- Failure to follow classroom policies or instructor guidance.
- Inappropriate conduct toward students or faculty.
- Repeated disregard for the boundaries of auditing (e.g., attempting to dominate discussion, repeatedly requesting grading exceptions, or interfering with course operations).
Dismissal requests should be submitted to FILL, and FILL will coordinate the auditor’s
removal in consultation with the Registrar’s Office as appropriate. When possible,
the auditor will be notified and given clear expectations prior to dismissal; however,
immediate removal may occur when warranted to protect the learning environment.
This dismissal process does not replace any existing College policies related to conduct,
safety, or student behavior, and auditors remain subject to applicable College standards
while participating in FSC courses. If dismissal is warranted, the Registrar’s Office
will record the student’s removal administratively. Please note that no refund will
be issued.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
No, Auditors may request as many courses as they would like, though enrollment is always contingent upon seat availability and course capacity.
Yes, to maintain an appropriate classroom experience and protect student access, no more than three (3) auditors may be enrolled in any one course section. If a course has already recieved three requests, the course will no longer appear on the available list of courses.
Instructors will be notified when an auditor is enrolled in their course. To ensure clear communication and consistent coordination, an automated email will be sent to the instructor when an auditor is added, either prior to the start of the semester or during the Add/Drop period.
