Annual Lecture Series

The Mark Ellis Annual Lecture Series is the Center for Criminal Justice Studies’ premier annual event, bringing distinguished leaders and practitioners in criminal justice to Farmingdale State College to discuss pressing issues facing the profession. Established in honor of Officer Mark Ellis, a 1997 Criminal Justice graduate who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the lecture series serves as a tribute to his legacy of service, courage, and commitment to public safety.

Each year, the series features prominent voices from law enforcement, corrections, intelligence, public policy, and related fields who share their experiences, leadership insights, and perspectives on emerging challenges in criminal justice. The event provides students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with accomplished professionals, explore contemporary issues shaping the field, and gain valuable career and networking connections.

Through this annual tradition, the Center honors Officer Ellis’s memory while inspiring the next generation of criminal justice professionals to pursue careers grounded in service, leadership, and integrity.
 

In Honor of Officer Mark Joseph Ellis 

Officer Mark Ellis was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while rescuing victims trapped in the World Trade Center.

Officer Ellis had served with the New York City Police Department for four years, assigned to Transit District 4. He was survived by his parents and sister. Officer Ellis was posthumously awarded the New York City Police Department's Medal of Honor for his heroic actions.

Officer Ellis graduated FSC as a Criminal Justice major in 1997.
