Technology Challenges of Offshore Wind
3. Technical Challenges and Supply chain in Offshore Wind
Technical Challenges in Offshore Wind category focuses on the technical aspect of the offshore wind industry, including technical concepts, and requirements. Participants will learn about the various components of an offshore wind farm, including turbines, substations, and cables. This category covers topics such as project management, safety, and environmental considerations, including deployment, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind turbines. Upon completion, participants will be able to understand where in the OSW Supply chain their business fits.
· Module 3.1: What is Offshore Wind and why is it relevant- Marj Issapour
This module is the overview of development in United State and specifically in New York State. The list of developers and some useful sites will be included. Some information and statistics on State’s local content requirements will be covered. Learning Objectives:
o Why should small businesses learn about OSW (Offshore Wind)
o Who to use this course to get maximum benefits
o What do they need to know about developers
o Where should they register
· Module 3.2: Where are OSW farm developments and how does a wind turbine Work (Supriya)
This is an introductory course to explain how Wind Energy works.
o An overview of the history of wind energy in Europe and US.
o Wind Turbines. What is it and how does work
o On shore vs Offshore
o Floating vs fixed foundation
· Module 3.3: OSW Supply Chain (Khosro Shirvani)
The goal of this module is to help small business figure out where they fall in the supply chain.
The focus will be on the offshore wind supply chain, which constitutes a network of companies, manufacturers, and service providers engaged in the entire lifecycle of offshore wind projects. This module will focus on:
o Phases of OSW Development
o Define the different tiers in the offshore wind supply chain and their role and responsibilities
· Module 3.4: Offshore Site Investigation, Planning & Permitting (Supriya Karmakar)
The process of investigating, planning, and developing offshore wind sites is a comprehensive and multi-stage endeavor aimed at ensuring the successful establishment of offshore wind farms. This module will present an outline on:
o The essential steps involved in this process (including preliminary site assessment, feasibility studies, site surveys, environmental impact assessment, permitting)
o What are the key federal and state government bodies involved in the process
· Module 3.5: Wind farm construction and Installation (Khosro Shirvani)
In this module, we will investigate the construction process of an offshore wind farm, which is a highly intricate procedure. The module will cover various aspects, starting from selecting the appropriate foundations to shipping components to the site for installation. Specifically, we will discuss different foundation types, the installation of monopiles.
o Marine construction process, and foundation types
o Transportation of all wind turbine components
o Jobs and occupations in this sector
· Module 3.6: Manufacturing in Wind Energy industry (Khosro Shirvani)
In this module, we will investigate the Manufacturing phase of the development. Specifically, the course will focus on:
o Recognition of the components within a wind turbine
o Where are they currently produced and what is the potential of manufacturing sector
· Module 3.7: Bringing Wind Power infrastructure Ashore (Supriya)
In this module, our primary focus will be on the transportation of electricity generated at sea to the mainland for utilization in homes and businesses. We will explore the process of bringing power from offshore wind farms to the shore through specially designed cables. The module will discuss different methods for laying export cables beneath the seabed and also cover the underground transmission to the substation.
o What is the process of laying cables and setting up the substation
o Onshore vs offshore portion of the infrastructure
Module 3.8: Operation and Maintenance (Khosro Shirvani) Ongoing activities for the operation and maintenance of the OSW farms will be covered. The following tasks and activities will be explained.
o Who has the O& M responsibility
o What are the tasks involved in the process
o What are the qualifications needed to perfor
