Support for English Language Learners

Schedule an Appointment

The Writing Center is committed to supporting English language learners throughout their academic career. English language learner (ELL) tutoring focuses on building academic English fluency through in depth instruction on parts of speech, syntax, punctuation, and mechanics. Weekly conversation partners are also available to help students strengthen their speaking skills.

Bilingual ELL tutoring is available in Spanish.

ELL tutors are either bilingual or have extensive experience tutoring speakers of other languages. Combined with a conversational approach, support for English language learners encompasses writing, reading, listening and speaking skills.

About the Tutor

Michael A.

My name is Michael Amurata, I am from Long Island and am excited to work as a writing professional at Farmingdale’s writing center. I graduated from CUNY City College and am currently completing my master's in education at SUNY Empire. I have been teaching English for almost twenty years.

I have taught both in New York and abroad in Mexico City. I am bilingual and have a passion for literature and creative writing. I have had the opportunity to work with students from diverse backgrounds and am dedicated to working with students who are new English learners.

I believe in creating a positive space where my students feel comfortable to progress in their writing and feel free to make mistakes and ask questions to better their writing ability. In my free time I enjoy working in my garden, mountain biking, kayaking, and in the winter season you can find me on a mountain in Vermont snowboarding.
