Farmingdale State College's Summer Academy is a pre-college program designed for motivated rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students seeking a hands-on introduction to college-level learning in a focused area of interest.

Hosted by Farmingdale State College’s Department of Pre-College Programs, Summer Academy offers immersive, two-week experiences where students dive deeply into a single discipline while earning official Farmingdale State College credit. Through small, engaging classes led by FSC faculty and industry professionals, students explore fields such as engineering, business, health sciences, technology, design, and more, gaining both practical skills and academic insight.

But Summer Academy is more than just coursework. Students experience life on a college campus, collaborating with peers, engaging in applied projects, and building confidence in a supportive, high-energy environment. Whether participating in lab work, design challenges, simulations, or case studies, students are actively learning by doing.

Summer Academy is part of FSC’s broader pre-college ecosystem, which includes the University in the High School (UHS) dual enrollment program. Together, these programs provide a seamless pathway for students to begin earning college credit early, explore potential majors, and position themselves for future academic and career success.

NON-CREDIT-BEARING:

3D Design & Digital Fabrication is a workforce-focused, non-credit experience!
Students develop industry-relevant skills in 3D design, rapid prototyping, and modern manufacturing technologies.

In this hands‑on summer program, high school students dive into the exciting world of 3D design and digital fabrication. Using industry‑grade modeling software, campers learn how to bring their ideas to life and transform digital designs into real‑world objects with modern 3D printers. As they gain confidence with core design concepts, they move on to exploring major 3D printing technologies—such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA)—through engaging, practical lab activities.

Throughout the program, students discover how material selection influences performance, practice preparing and optimizing files for printing, and ultimately design, print, and test their own functional 3D parts. Along the way, they build skills in design thinking, problem‑solving, and rapid prototyping through projects ranging from functional gadgets to mechanical components. By the end, students gain a strong foundation in how 3D printing supports product development and modern manufacturing. No prior experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to create.

Daily Experience
Each day is structured to mirror a true college lab and design environment, blending technical instruction with hands-on creation:

  • Morning: 3D design instruction and concept development
  • Midday: Applied modeling labs and guided software practice
  • Lunch: Informal design critiques and peer collaboration
  • Afternoon: 3D printing labs, prototyping, and testing
  • Closing: Iteration, troubleshooting, and design portfolio development

Signature Experience
The program culminates in a 3D Design & Fabrication Capstone, where students design, prototype, and present a functional 3D-printed project—demonstrating their ability to move from concept to creation using real-world tools and processes.

Monday, July 20th - Friday, July 31st

NON-CREDIT-BEARING:

Automotive Technology & Service is a workforce-focused, non-credit experience!
Students develop practical automotive skills and explore career pathways through real shop experience and guided instruction.

This summer automotive program introduces high school students to the automotive service industry through a balance of classroom instruction and hands-on shop experience. Students gain an understanding of how vehicles work, explore career opportunities in the automotive field, and learn the importance of safety, responsibility, and professionalism in a shop setting. The program is designed for beginners and focuses on building confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while exposing students to real-world automotive technology.

A major focus of the program is hands-on experience. Under instructor supervision, students work directly with vehicles, tools, and shop equipment to perform basic, maintenance, and service-related tasks. These practical activities allow students to apply what they learn in class, develop mechanical skills, and become comfortable working in a professional shop environment. By the end of the program, students will have gained valuable real-world experience and a clearer understanding of automotive technology, automotive career pathways, and post-secondary opportunities.

Daily Experience
Each day mirrors a real automotive training environment, combining classroom learning with hands-on shop experience:

  • Morning: Automotive fundamentals and system overviews (engines, brakes, electrical)
  • Midday: Guided demonstrations and tool training in the shop
  • Lunch: Peer collaboration and informal discussions on automotive careers
  • Afternoon: Hands-on service tasks, diagnostics, and maintenance work on vehicles
  • Closing: Reflection, skill review, and applied problem-solving discussions

Signature Experience
The program culminates in an Automotive Service Capstone, where students diagnose, service, and present a vehicle-based project—demonstrating their understanding of core systems, safety practices, and real-world automotive skills.
