Mandatory Continuing Education

On July 11, 1996, Bill 7324A was passed by the Senate and the Assembly stating registered dental hygienists are required to complete a minimum of 24 contact hours of continuing education every TRIENNIAL registration period, inclusive of an approved infection control training course every four years, and a one-time only mandatory child abuse course approved by the State Education Department. Farmingdale State College is an approved provider of continuing education credits in New York State for both dental hygienists and dentists; the American Academy of Dental Hygiene is the approved NYS sponsor.

ORAL HEALTH FOR PATIENTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

This course will introduce dental providers to the unique dental needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In addition, the dental professional will have a better understanding of factors outside of dentistry that can impact oral health in this vulnerable patient population.

At the conclusion of this course, the registrant will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of oral health in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
  • Recognize various IDD diagnoses and the implications within the oral cavity
  • Identify various modifications that may be necessary when treating individuals with IDD
  • Recognize other factors outside of dentistry that may affect oral health in individuals with IDD

DENTAL PHARMACOLOGY OF NERVOUS SYSTEM DRUGS

There are many reasons the dental hygienist should become familiar with the autonomic nervous system. Certain ANS drugs are used in dentistry; for example, vasoconstrictors added to local anesthetics and drugs used to increase/decrease salivary flow. We will discuss the basics of the autonomic nervous system and the systemic effects of certain drugs on this integral system, including dental hygiene considerations.

At the conclusion of this course, the registrant will be able to:

  • Identify the major components and functional organization of the autonomic nervous system
  • Distinguish the major neurotransmitters in the autonomic nervous system and the importance of receptors
  • Recognize the pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications, and dental considerations of cholinergic agents, which act on the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system
  • Recognize the pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications, and dental considerations of anticholinergic agents, which act on the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system
  • Discuss the pharmacologic effects, adverse reactions, contraindications, and dental considerations of adrenergic agents
  • Explain the workings of adrenergic blocking agents

Of the 24 credits that are required during each registration period, 14 must be live courses.

Live courses are those in which you are able to interact with the instructor. A pre-taped lecture with no means of direct interaction would not be acceptable as a live course even if it is a live telecast.
