Utilizing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Web Content
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website to increase its visibility in unpaid (organic) search engine results. Its core purpose is to drive more, higher-quality traffic to a site by ensuring search engines understand, crawl, and rank the content. Key strategies include on-page content, technical optimization, and backlink building.
What is Web Page Description?
A description for web page(s) is a brief sentence or two that describes what the content of the page is going to be about. For example, for the RamChella event at Farmingdale State College the webpage description may be something like "The annual RamChella Event hosted at Farmingdale State College to mark the end of term celebration. For 2025 the performing guests are xyz". Web page descriptions help users reach relevant content through search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.
What Are Keywords?
Keywords are ideas and topics that define what your content is about. In terms of SEO, they’re the words and phrases that users enter into search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. to discover content. In simplified terms, everything on your webpage, all the images, video, copy, etc. down to simple words and phrases, are your primary keywords.
As a content creator, you want the keywords on your page to be relevant to what people are searching for so they have a better chance of finding your content in the search engine result page (SERP.)
Why are keywords important?
SEO keywords are essential for improving website ranking and attracting organic traffic. If your goal is to drive organic traffic to your site, the keywords you choose to target (meaning the keywords you create content about and optimize your pages for) will determine how people find you through search. Identifying and effectively targeting your primary keywords is the foundation of a good SEO strategy designed to drive more organic traffic to your site. To create content that ranks well organically and drives visitors to your site, you need to understand the needs of your audience, the language they use and the type of content they seek. For Farmingdale State College, we have to consider if the content is for our students, faculty, staff, or the general community. Based on the audience, the keywords should be selected.
Optimize Search Engine for your Web Content:
There are different types of search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Firefox etc. that showcase results that users query for. The search engines may be different but each search engine will showcase or promote content that is accessible, well organized, and generally free from errors.
Google's automated systems are designed to use many different factors to rank great content. After identifying relevant content, our systems aim to prioritize those that seem most helpful. To do this, they identify a mix of factors that can help determine which content demonstrates aspects of experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, or what we call E-E-A-T.
