Mini Bin Program

The “Mini Bin Project” replaces traditional large desk-side trash cans in offices with small “mini bins” and pairs them with standard-sized recycling bins. The goal is to increase recycling rates, reduce contamination, and encourage behavior change through waste generation awareness. By relying less on custodial staff, the custodial team can redirect more of its time and attention to the places that need it most: high-traffic areas, restrooms, and other campus spaces that depend on consistent, thorough cleaning to stay safe and sanitary.

How It Works

1. Desk-Side Setup

• Each office or workstation receives: 
  
  • One small mini trash bin
  • One full-sized recycling bin
• The mini bin will have no liner to reinforce the idea that trash should be limited (as well as eliminate single-use plastic bin liners as outlined in the SUNY Plastics Elimination Policy).

2. Centralized Trash Bins

• Large trash, cans/bottles (e.g. metal and plastic), and paper recycling containers are placed in centralized locations (hallways, lounges, academic building corridors, dining halls, etc.).
• Individuals must walk to these locations to dispose of trash—improving decision-making and reducing desk-side contamination.
