Academic Warning, Early Warning & Academic Probation

The Student Success and Advising Center is committed to helping students overcome academic challenges and stay on track toward their educational goals. If you have received an Academic Warning, Early Warning notification, or have been placed on Academic Probation, a variety of support services and resources are available to help you succeed.

Select a section below to learn more about your academic standing and the support available to you.

The Early Warning process is designed to identify academic challenges early enough in the semester for students to take action and improve their performance.
Around the sixth or seventh week of the semester, instructors may submit an Early Warning notification for students whose coursework performance falls below a "C."
An Early Warning notification is not permanently recorded on a student's transcript. It serves as an opportunity to connect with support services and develop a plan for success.

If You Receive an Early Warning Notification:

  • Meet with your course instructor.
  • Schedule an appointment with an advisor.
  • Utilize tutoring and academic support services.
  • Develop a plan to improve your academic performance.

Academic Warning applies only to first-time, full-time first-year students whose first-semester Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below 2.0.
Students on Academic Warning may continue their studies at Farmingdale State College but must complete an Academic Success Action Plan before registering for the next semester. A registration hold will remain on the student's account until all required action items have been completed.

The Academic Success Action Plan is developed in partnership with an advisor and may include:

  • Academic advising appointments
  • Tutoring services
  • Academic workshops
  • Study skills development
  • Time management strategies
  • Other support resources

Once all Action Plan requirements have been completed, the registration hold will be removed.

Students who do not achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher by the end of the following semester will be placed on Academic Probation.

Students who earn a semester GPA below 2.0 will be placed on Academic Probation, except for first-time, full-time first-year students who qualify for Academic Warning.

Academic Probation serves as an opportunity to receive additional guidance, support, and resources while working toward improved academic standing.

The Student Success and Advising Center can help students:

  • Create an academic recovery plan
  • Connect with campus resources
  • Strengthen study habits
  • Improve time management skills
  • Develop strategies for long-term academic success

Students who remain below a 2.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters may be subject to academic suspension in accordance with College policy.
