Computer Security Technology and Security Systems Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General Information

What is the difference between Security Systems (SS) and Computer Security Technology (CST)?

One of the main differences is that Computer Security Technology requires more technical Math and Security concepts that also lead to more development of security tools. Whereas security systems courses are more technical and focus on the utilization of tools and less on the development.

Security Systems unlike Computer Security Technology doesn't contain as many math courses.

What type of computer do I need for the SS/CST courses?

A laptop or PC is highly recommended. Most of the software you have to use in these degree programs have versions available on Mac and Windows. That being said Windows is always preferred.

I am new to the department. What do I need to know?

There are three main systems you should know.

  • Brightspace: to access courses and submit assignments.
  • DegreeWorks: for advisement and viewing degree progress.
  • OASIS: to register for courses, financial aid and billing.

If you are a first-year student, you will be advised by the AAIC before school starts. However, AAIC advisors will not be your permanent advisors. After you achieve 30 credits you as the student will have a CST advisor.

If you are a new transfer student, you must have your transcript(s) evaluated by the transfer office and then meet with your CST advisor and be advised by the advisor before the school starts.

I want to take higher levels of Engineering courses or Programming courses while I am in the program. Am I allowed to take these courses?

Yes, we have technical electives that need to be satisfied, and also, we encourage students to take up minors if they want.

Who is my advisor?

The advisor you have is based on your last name when you first visit the department we will be able to help you. If you would like to make an appointment with the faculty member please go to their office or make an appointment online through Microsoft Bookings

What can I do if I can’t get in touch with my advisor?

Email is one of the best ways to contact your advisor. However, during the registration period, all of our advisors will receive significant amounts of emails from all of their advisees. Please allow two business days for your advisor to respond to your emails. Therefore, it is recommended to contact your advisor as soon as you receive the email for registration to avoid delay.

Do I need an alternate pin?

Alternate pins are required for all incoming transfers and first-year students.

What should I do if my registration is not accepted on OASIS?

You may have a hold, you will need to clear the hold with the corresponding office (e.g. admission, registrar, or financial aid office) before registering for any courses.

The course you tried to register for is full. Please see your advisor for an alternative option or see the Department Chair for the waiting list of the course.

The course you tried to register for requires prerequisite course(s). If you are taking the prerequisite course(s) in the current semester, please see the Chair
