Foreign Language Proficiency Exam
The Foreign Language Proficiency Exam will be offered for one week each Spring and Fall semester unless otherwise stated below. The exam is not offered over the Summer or Intersession.
All forms and payments must be received at least two weeks prior to the exam date in order to be eligible to take the exam.
Please note: there is limited seating. You must fill out the registration form and complete payment before you are confirmed for the exam date and time.
Spring 2026 Exam Dates
Monday 4/20/2026 at 5pm
Tuesday 4/21/2026 at 5pm
Wednesday 4/22/2026 at 5pm
Thursday 4/23/2026 at 5pm
Friday 4/24/2026 at 5pm
Evaluators will evaluate and return exams to the Modern Languages Department by 5/8/2026. In cases in which the granting of credits was not recommended based on the proficiency exam evaluation, those students will be contacted during this time by either the evaluator of their exam or the Modern Languages Department. The Department will submit the approved Credit by Evaluation forms to the Registrar by 5/15/2026. The credits granted for the exam will appear in students' DegreeWorks on or around the same day that the last of Spring 2026 final grades are due (Saturday 5/23/2026).
Exams are currently being offered for the following languages (subject to change):
Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), Ethiopian (Amharic), French, German, Greek, Hebrew,
Hindi, Italian, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Spanish*,
Turkish, Ukrainian, and Urdu.
*SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPANISH ONLY: Students seeking to take the exam for Spanish ARE REQUIRED to first meet with a Spanish Language Advisor before they can register for the exam. Once the evaluator confirms fluency, the evaluator will provide confirmation to the department secretary and the student may then register for the exam using the general link. IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE TAKING THE EXAM
- This exam is for NATIVE SPEAKERS ONLY! You must be fluent in reading and writing your language.
- The exam consists of written translation and an essay. There will be no verbal component.
- The exam can only be taken one time and the grade is Pass/Fail. This will not affect you GPA either way. A failing grade will not be posted.
- Credit will ONLY be posted to the Gen Ed Foreign Language requirement. Credit cannot be used toward an elective.
- This is a proctored exam so you must be able to come to campus.
- The fee is $120 payable through Student Accounts.
- Please ask all questions you may have before registering to take the exam.

- Use the booking page to register for the exam with the Modern Languages Department and wait for a confirmation email with the approved registration form and payment instructions. DO NOT make payment without the approved and signed registration form.
