Foreign Language Proficiency Exam

The foreign language exam is offered 3 times per Spring and Fall semester (6 times per year), unless otherwise stated. 


Due to COVID-19, the social distancing guidelines that are in place and the limited number of seats available, we will only be offering the exam to seniors graduating Fall 2020. If you are not graduating, please check this page in January for the Spring 2021 exam dates.


This exam is for NATIVE SPEAKERS only! You must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing your language. You can only take the exam one time, the fee is $120 and the grade is Pass/Fail. You will receive 3 credits for Foreign Language upon passing. This exam will have no effect on your GPA. Please ask all questions before registering to take the exam.

FOR SPANISH LANGUAGE ONLY... please email Dr. Eugenio Villarreal to receive clearance and complete registration with him. This exam will be verbal over phone or video for Fall 2020 ONLY. 


EXAMS GIVEN IN: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), Ethiopian (Amharic) French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Turkish, and Urdu.

The exam is divided in three parts:

  • A translation of text from English to the target language.  Aprox. 500 words.

  • A translation of text from the target language to English. Aprox. 500 words.

  • A 250-word essay, written in the target language, on a topic selected by the evaluator. 


This is a proctored exam that must be given in person. The exam cannot be given verbally or online. Written translation only.
