Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?

  • U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents
  • first-time freshman
  • accepted into the Applied Mathematics or Bioscience major at Farmingdale State College
  • strong academic record in high school
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the financial aid office.

How will the scholarship be awarded?

The $20,000 scholarship will be awarded as $5,000 per year, for four years as long as the student remains in good standing and meets renewal criteria (see below).

Does the scholarship have to be used to cover tuition?

The scholarship will be added to whatever other financial aid (Federal Pell Grant, NY TAP awards, etc) a student might have. If a scholarship recipient's tuition is already covered by other financial aid, then the $5,000 per year can be applied to transportation, meals, books, and other education- related expenses.

Will the scholarship impact my financial aid in the future?

No, the scholarship award will not affect future financial aid.

Do I need to submit a FAFSA?

Yes. The financial aid office will use information provided in the FAFSA form to determine if you have unmet financial need and are eligible for the SSTEM scholarship.

What type of grades do I need to apply for the SSTEM Scholarship?

For Math majors, FSC prefers to see a grade of A or A- in HS pre-calculus. For Biology majors, FSC prefers to see grades of A or A- in HS biology and chemistry. Students with lower grades will be considered provided that the HS teacher or counselor considers a student to be an exceptionally strong candidate for the scholarship.
