Crip Camp Documentary - Fall 2021
Blazing Trails to Inclusion Series - Part III
After completing Part I and II of the series, now that you’ve learned about disability and the civil rights laws that protect the disability community, there’s no better time to watch the film Crip Camp. This Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary gives a firsthand account of the disability experience, and the birth of activism that became critical in the fight for disability access and inclusion in the United States.
Participants will watch the documentary on their own time, between September 30th and October 11th, leading up to our discussion of the film.
There are two ways to watch Crip Camp:
- Netflix (with a subscription): Link to film Crip Camp on Netflix
- YouTube (for free): Link to Crip Camp film on YouTube
While you’re watching, reflect on what you’re seeing. Some things to think about while you watch:
- What is your current experience with disability? Have you, or someone you know, ever had a lived experience with disability?
- How are people with disabilities represented in the film? What are their experiences like?
- What shocks you about the experiences of the individuals in the film?
- How does the film demonstrate progress for the disability community, and what work is left to do?
Take note of things you learned and what resonates with you. We will discuss all of that and more at our next event in the series, Crip Camp Discussion, on October 12th!
