About SURI

The Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) was founded in Summer 2020 and is proudly housed within the College’s Research Aligned Mentorship (RAM) Program—a campus-wide initiative that supports undergraduate research across nearly all academic disciplines.

Each summer, SURI recruits and supports first- and second-year students to engage in faculty-mentored research experiences. These projects are supervised by Farmingdale State College faculty and often align with interdisciplinary themes or shared research interests.

SURI’s structure is inspired by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) model, providing a cohort-based experience where students explore topics through collaborative, inquiry-driven work.

For many participants, SURI is their first formalized research experience, offering a gateway into the world of academic and applied investigation. The program’s mission is to foster curiosity, confidence, and deeper engagement in research—laying the foundation for continued academic and professional exploration.
