We’re halfway through an exciting and transformative summer with SURI (Summer Undergraduate Research Institute) and our students have a lot to say! From stepping into labs and fieldwork to diving into journal clubs and workshops, SURI Scholars are discovering just how powerful undergraduate research can be.

So what’s it really like behind the scenes? We asked students to reflect on their experience so far—and here’s what they shared:

🧠 “Now I get what research really is.”

Many students came into SURI with limited exposure to research—but that’s quickly changed. As one participant put it:

“This experience has really helped me get an accurate understanding of what undergrad research is and what the process actually looks like. I also get to see the benefits of our findings, and they can be very beneficial.”

Others shared how the program reshaped their assumptions:

“Before, I thought research was only for science majors or something super technical, but now I see how it can apply to real social issues with the topic I am working on.”

“It has opened my eyes to pursue future research opportunities.”

🎓 Growing Confidence—and Graduate School Dreams

SURI is not just about completing a summer project. It's about building a future. For many, that means envisioning themselves in graduate school for the first time:

“It is definitely reinforcing my confidence in enrolling in graduate school.”

“It has motivated me to want to get involved in research even after SURI is over.”

🔍 Behind the Scenes: Favorite Moments

When asked what they’ve enjoyed most, students highlighted several standouts:

  • The Workshops:

    “I wouldn't change the weekly Tuesday workshops—I think it's a great way to stay connected and informed about UR/General related topics.” 

  • The Exposure:

    “The best part has been learning about a different field of technology.”

  • The Learning:

    “The best part about it so far is definitely how much I’ve learned—stuff I can’t wait to apply.”

  • The Confidence Boost:

    “Doing the workshop is so interesting and it honestly builds that confidence that I need.”
