Food, food, and more food will be the focus of International Food Day at Farmingdale State College on Thursday, October 9. The event, which will be held at the Campus Center Ballroom, is free to the public. Events – from cooking demonstrations and tastings to lectures about sustainable gardens and food security – will take place from 11:30 AM – 4:30 PM.
The spotlight will shine on Education, Information, Demonstration, and Contemplation of food and its supplies, preparation, and sources. The event is sponsored by Farmingdale’s Social Science Research Institute, to promote a vision of food that is healthy, affordable, and produced with care.
Scheduled sessions are:
- Michael Veracka, Professor of Urban Horticulture and Design - sustainable gardens
- August Ruckdeschel, Suffolk County Agriculture and Fisheries – farms and farming
- Heather Forest and Larry Foglia, LI Community Agricultural Network – display and marketing of produce
- Bhavani Jaroff, Slow Food Huntington – Slow Food movement
- Dr. Zahrine Bajwa, Cornell Cooperative Extension - food security
- Eric Thorensen, Sustainable Long Island – food equity and access; food report card
- Mary Kirby-Diaz, Professor Emeritus, Sociology – Locavores
- Aramark, Farmingdale State College’s food service – farm-to-table food demonstration and tasting
