In its over 70-year history, the New York State Economics Association (NYSEA) has only presented 17 individuals with its Distinguished Fellow Award. This year, Farmingdale State College (FSC) School of Business Dean Richard Vogel has made that elite list.

An active NYSEA member for almost 20 years, Vogel has served in multiple roles, including as conference proceedings editor for 10 years, vice president for two years, and as president for two years. He is currently joined in the NYSEA by FSC Chair of Economics Xu Zhang, Professor Abeba Mussa, Professor Ken Liao, Professor David Vitt, Professor Mitali Pradhan, Professor Meeghan Rogers, and Professor Garrison Song.

“Many congratulations to Richard for being recognized among his peers. We are proud of his professional accomplishments and contributions, which further FSC’s success,” said Laura Joseph, EdD, senior vice president and provost of FSC. “This NYSEA honor is a true reflection of Richard’s knowledge, experience, and commitment to his field.”

Formed in 1948 at Wells College, the NYSEA is a not-for-profit corporation that promotes the advancement of economic education and scholarship in New York State. The association publishes two industry journals, The Proceedings of the New York State Economics Association, and The New York Economic Review (NYER), and hosts an annual conference. In the past 11 years, it has been held at FSC four times. The 2023 Annual Conference was held recently at State University of New York (SUNY) Old Westbury, where Vogel and FSC Professor Worku Bitew presented Incentivizing Profit-Oriented Production for Environmental Remediation.

Vogel received a BA in economics from Florida Atlantic University, a MA in economics from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in economics from Florida International University. A member of FSC’s faculty since 1998, he has served as the dean of the School of Business since 2013. Previously, he served as the chair of the History, Economics and Politics Department, where he developed FSC’s B.S. program in applied economics.

Vogel is also an accomplished scholar and has authored numerous articles and presentations on a variety of business and economic issues, including the effects of natural disasters on regional growth, sports economics, student performance metrics, and recreational fishing as a driver of economic activity.
