Supporting Women In Computing Club (SWiC) has been resurrected from its inactive status over the past few years despite being in the midst of a pandemic. As Professors Aydin and Villani held workshops in February 2020 making students aware of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women Conference and its student scholarships, a group of female students rallied and took the initiative to reinstate the Club.
Co-Presidents Rita Moreno and Sindhu Padaga collaborated with Maria Jurado, Emily
Stock, and Safia Khursheed to remotely get paperwork filed by the end of Spring 2020
semester. Safia and Emily joined as Vice President and Treasurer along with Salma
Abdeltawab as Secretary. Throughout the summer, the officers met, recreated constitution,
attended training, updated the club logo and created an agenda for meetings for the
Fall 2020 semester. Faculty Advisors Aydin and Villani met with the officers throughout
the summer as well to answer questions and provide guidance.
SWiC’s goal is to make the entire campus community aware of women, minorities and
student talent in the computing community, and to empower women and minorities in
the computing community. SWiC’s goal is also to encourage more students to join and
prepare themselves with the confidence, strength and intelligence within themselves
to stay in the computer systems department, and to build and enforce strong networking
and communication skills for students.
