Threshold: Faculty Biennial Exhibit

Curated by Beth Giacummo

September 14 – November 20, 2026

This Fall the Memorial Gallery features a special exhibit, a biennial tradition of highlighting our Visual Communications faculty! This year's exhibition entitled Threshold invited faculty to create new work or submit existing work that explores the theme Threshold pieces that engage with borders, doorways, and in-between states, as well as concepts of physical, psychological, or cultural liminality. All interpretations of the theme were encouraged.

Threshold will take place September 14 – November 20, 2026 with an artist reception on October 8 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM.

The exhibition features works by Visual Communications Faculty: Adrian Sinnott, Alina Wilczynski, Bill Miller, Brian O'Keefe & Tom Flint, Carrie-Anne Gonzalez, Cliff Miller, Dimitry Schidlovsky, Donna Proper, Francis Klaess, Jack Harris, Juan Lopez Espantaleon, Kim Wild, Lauren Cesiro, Melisa Tekin, Michael Berrell, Michael Mastermaker, Miranda Gatewood, Roshanak Keyghobadi, Susann Gude, Thomas Germano, William Dodge and Yiye Cho.

The faculty exhibition opens a window into the working life of the artists shaping our students' careers. For students in a Visual Communications program, seeing a professor's own practice on display is a rare and valuable thing. Most of the time, the relationship runs one direction: professor teaches, student learns. An exhibition flips that. Students get to stand in front of work their instructor actually made, wrestled with, revised, maybe even failed at a few times before it came together. That's a different kind of lesson than anything delivered in a lecture, and arguably just as important as the coursework itself. The exhibition shows students what a sustained, professional creative practice actually looks like, not just what it produces once it's polished for a syllabus.

The campus community also gets to experience the work of their peers and gives an opportunity for our Design and Visual Communications program to express itself as a living creative community. The exhibition becomes a shared space where teaching and practice sit side by side, and where the audience, students most of all, get to see the full arc of what it means to work as a visual artist and communicator, on and off the classroom clock.

The campus community and beyond is invited to join us to celebrate the work of our Visual Communications faculty October 8 from 5:30 - 7:00 PM.
