19th-20th C. Natural Science from Colombia: Juan Antonio Uribe's Portraits of Nature

Juan Antonio Uribe (1858-1835) was a Colombian scientist, educator, and pioneer of the defense of the natural world. His journalistic articles, collected in Cuadros de naturaleza [Portraits of Nature], offer reflections on plant sensibility and social organization of insects, and include early manifestations of science fiction. The Botanical Garden of Medellín is named after him.

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Juan Pablo Cárdenas (Massachusetts College of Art and Design), who is working on the first English translation of Uribe’s articles. This talk is part of the course MLG327-Science, Literature and Film in the Hispanic World.
