Project-Based Learning in the Age of AI: Designing Assignments That Hold Up

What happens when an assignment can be completed by AI without the student making any meaningful decisions? In this hands-on workshop, faculty will explore how principles from project-based learning and design thinking can help us rethink assignments for the age of generative AI. Participants will bring an existing assignment, project, or learning objective and work through a practical framework for redesigning it around process, iteration, decision-making, and evidence of learning. We will consider both AI-resistant and AI-integrated approaches and use AI itself as a tool for testing and developing stronger assignments.

What to bring:

• One assignment, project, or learning objective from a course you teach that does not currently uses AI
• If possible a laptop with the AI app of your choosing installed.
