Did you know that the RAM program has an adopted highway? Every month the RAM program, whether it would be students, faculty, or just people that want to make a difference come together and take just one hour out of the month and volunteer. It is an amazing opportunity to earn hours for your applied learning credit as a student, it also looks amazing on your resume because who doesn’t like others that volunteer?

I’m currently a junior majoring in PCM and I’ve been involved with RAM events since my first semester here at Farmingdale. RAM has not only had an enormous impact on my college life but also my adult life going into the real world. It’s given me amazing opportunities to create lots of friendships, advice on anything I could possibly think about, and my favorite out of everything is the chance to make a difference in our community and volunteer with friends.

Now you might be thinking “cleaning up trash? That sounds incredibly boring and nasty, however as a student it might be my favorite event to participate in through RAM. In the most recent highway cleanup we had the highest turnout of people with 25 total persons!! You have the privilege of finding whatever junk that people will throw out of their car, from my personal experiences I’ve found a PlayStation 4, numerous bottles of various brands of alcohol, etc. This also gives you the chance to make friends with new people as you work together and have the choice of either picking the trash up or holding the bag of garbage. It’s a funny way of saying it but you are actually bonding over garbage! And those friendships truly last a lifetime because of how special they are.

So maybe you want to volunteer but aren’t interested in the highway cleanup. There are plenty of more events where you can participate, coming up on Sunday October 17th we have the choice of joining either of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk or AHRC Walk. In my freshman year I did both of these events, they were both lots of fun where I handed out t-shirts, water bottles to people partaking in either walk or simply just cheering on the participants! These are both great opportunities to make friends, add hours to applied learning or simply you wanna help out!
