FSC Introduces New Campus-Wide Green Initiative

Anyone looking to take a spin around campus or run an errand in town now has wheels at their disposal through a new Farmingdale State College (FSC) bicycle rental program.

Run by Pedal Share and sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, FSC introduced 15 bicycles on campus, with five seated at three locations including Campus Center, Nold Hall Athletic Complex, and Orchard Hall. Riders can pay $4 per hour, $35 per day, or $59 for the year.

Since they arrived last Spring, the bicycles have been rented nearly 160 times, with usage beginning on the first day and 105 rentals occurring at the popular Orchard Hall location.

The program, which has received support from FSC’s Recreation and Athletic Departments, offers riders a variety of options, said Campus Sustainability Manager Maia Roseval. “There are lots of uses for the bikes – whether there is a final destination in mind, or one just wants to go on a leisurely ride around campus. It’s also great for a student who may want to run into the village to grab a coffee or lunch.”

Looking ahead, the program will be in high gear at the FSC Car Free Day Rally on September 19, held during Long Island Mobility Week. The bicycles will remain available until the end of October, when plans call for a tune up and a "brake" during the winter months

Roseval, who will continue gauging the campus community’s interest in the annual program, said it will cycle back next Spring.

“I’ve received positive feedback about the program so far and I’m really excited to see how they get used with the students back on campus,” said Roseval. “The program offers a nice service to the campus community that promotes health and wellness as well as sustainable transportation. I’d say that’s a win-win.”
