In-person activities are back through the Campus Recreation Department, and students can’t get enough of them.
Whether it’s intramural soccer, dodgeball tournaments, or fitness classes, students are happy to be active again after the two-year pandemic lull. “There is such a passion for it,” said Shaun Fean, Director of Campus Recreation. “Recreational soccer can draw 30 kids on one day. We’ve gone from little-to-nothing to vibrant.”
Other intramural programs include flag football and basketball. The department also is offering fitness classes on campus through AMP, which are open to students and staff. One of the courses focuses on speed and agility, while the other involves weightlifting. Students can register online for the programs. “We’re trying to reduce barriers to participation,” Fean said.
Also back are off-campus bus trips, including a recent jaunt to a New York Yankees’ game, and a Giants and Jets and New York Rangers game are in the works. Fean also is considering offering outdoor hiking and kayaking trips.
The number one activity new students ask about is Esports, he added. “That’s been a feather in our cap.” How to get involved with Esports was the number one question at orientation, he said. FSC’s Esports team is seven-time conference champions and boasts 150 players. G FUEL, The Official Energy Drink of Esports®, recently became the team’s sponsor.
Critical to getting students involved is being receptive, Fean said. He tries to keep his finger on the pulse of the student body, as he puts it, communicate with students, and check social media. “I have conversations and try to find out what will draw them in. I try to hear what they need and want.” Some students have expressed interest in a dance team club, and Fean said he would support that. “I think you would see school spirit grow,” he said.
While he would like to add even more club sports, space and staffing are limited. But Fean always is willing to listen to ideas. “We have some students interested in cricket,” he said. “Some also asked about a capture-the-flag event. You need to try it out and not be afraid to fail.”
