Celebrated across the country from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month highlights the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
The “month” starts Sept. 15 because that is the anniversary date of five Hispanic countries achieving independence.
About 26 percent of FSC students identified as Hispanic or Latino in 2021, according to the college’s Office of Institutional Research. “It’s important for students to see a celebration of their heritage and it’s important to keep it going,” said Lukas Miedreich, associate director of student activities and Greek life.
“This is extremely positive,” said Dr. Kevin D. Jordan, FSC’s vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer. “The college wants to continue to build on these events and increase student engagement.”
