Youth, Gender and Homophobia the Topics of Lecture at Farmingdale State College

CJ Pascoe, an award-winning author, sociologist and professor of sociology at the University of Oregon, will speak on issues ranging from homophobia to heterosexism, at Farmingdale State College on Tuesday, February 17.  The lecture – “Bullied: Youth, Gender and Homophobia” - will be held at the Little Theater in Roosevelt Hall, from 3 – 5 p.m.  The public is invited, and there is no cost for admission.

Dr. Pascoe is the award-winning author of Dude, You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School  (University of California Press), which she will discuss at length.  She is also a contributor to Hanging Out, Geeking Out and Messing Around: Living and Learning New Media (MIT Press).  She teaches on topics such as sexuality, social psychology, and gender and education, and instructs college students on how to combat homophobia and transphobia on their campuses and in the broader community.  Her books will be available at the bookstore in the Campus Center.

Dr. Pascoe’s current research is in two areas: young people’s practices of love and romance, and the formation and maintenance of online eating-disorder communities. She will take questions in an open forum after her talk.
