Sculptor/Artist Wendy Klemperer, whose art is expressed in vivid depictions of wildlife, will exhibit her work at the Memorial Gallery, in Hale Hall, at Farmingdale State College from Monday, September 8 through Friday, October 3. The show is free to the public; gallery hours are 10 AM – 4 PM, Monday through Friday.
Ms. Klemperer will also be giving a lecture on Tuesday, September 23 at Gleeson Hall, Room 104, at 3:05 PM. A reception will follow, from 5 – 7 PM at the Memorial Gallery. For more information, call 934-420-2181 or 934-420-5118.
“The imagery that pervades my work reflects a lifelong fascination with animals,” says Ms. Klemperer, who also does drawings, wax figures and wall reliefs. “As a child this led to hours of watching, drawing, and imagining. When I began making sculpture as an adult I developed these mental images in three dimensions.”
“The materials I use retain a raw, immediate quality. To make the sculptures I search scrap yards for pieces that have been discarded and ravaged by life in the yard. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and a potential new life. Industrial refuse is transformed into living form.”
This past spring Farmingdale’s Class of 2014 commissioned Ms. Klemperer to do a Ram sculpture, symbolizing the campus mascot. The work is expected to be completed and on display this fall.
A resident of Brooklyn, Ms. Klemperer has large-scale permanent installations from Maine to California, and a piece on display at SIAS University in Xinzheng, China.
