Recently, FSC hosted it's first inaugural Lavender Graduation to honor and acknowledge the achievements and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community of students. Not only was this a profound and pivotal moment in FSC history, the Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for the LGBTQIA+ community, has recognized Farmingdale State College as an academic institution that is reflective of an equitable and inclusive culture. Dr. Kevin Jordan, Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence, stated that the "Lavender Graduation is a welcome new Farmingdale tradition. Farmingdale State College is happy to be added to a list of colleges throughout the country that celebrates the accomplishments of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community.”
More than 200 colleges and universities across the country hold Lavender Graduations. They began in 1995 at the University of Michigan, thanks to the Director of the LGBT Campus Resource Center there, who was denied access to her own biological children’s graduation due to her sexual orientation.
