CSTEP/LSAMP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program/Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation) had a plan for the spring semester, full of exciting activities. With over 30 students participating in research, many were looking forward to presenting their projects at several conferences including the CSTEP Statewide Conference and the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference.

Planned activities included academic and personal development seminars, such as a 3-day Leadership Retreat on Shelter Island and annual graduate school tour. These were interspersed with our annual game night, and volunteer day at a shellfish hatchery. Most of these plans were trounced by Covid-19. Instead, creative virtual ways of helping students succeed were developed.

One of the most difficult adjustments of the pandemic is the social isolation, so keeping students engaged was of paramount importance. Our new "points-for-participation" program encouraged students to remain involved in CSTEP/LSAMP, and to take part in planned activities while earning points for stipends. The program was a resounding success, with over 70 students taking part in these enriching activities.

In addition to tutoring, online workshops continued to focus on skill development and maintaining a positive mindset. These were offered weekly and tied into blogs where students weighed in to share ideas. Our "Senior Send-off" recognized graduates for their accomplishments. Also, our Virtual Research Conference in May showcased student research projects conducted over the 2019-20 academic year with over 70 students and faculty in attendance.

CSTEP/LSAMP has certainly changed, but our mission – to help our students succeed academically, personally and in their STEM careers - remains unchanged.
