Our students often express their gratitude for the support of the EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) staff team at FSC. Students appreciate the opportunity to share their thoughts, aspirations, and concerns with someone who will listen and provide emotional support and coping skills.
Residential students faced some of the greatest challenges when unexpectedly displaced from campus dormitories, forcing them to secure alternate housing arrangements outside of the campus community. EOP students typically rely on campus resources such as housing, dining halls, employment, advisement, and tutoring services to support their pursuit of higher education. The loss of many of these resources further exacerbated the challenge of transitioning to online learning.
Students were also concerned about being exposed to the virus and potentially spreading it to their high-risk family members.
The program often serves as a secondary family unit for students. As described by EOP student Leslie Acosta "...I've endured many obstacles during my college career. I've cried, I've broken down, and I've been ready to give up...one of the main reasons I didn't is because of the help given to me by EOP. The thing I cherish the most is the love and support that staff provides on a personal level...and reminds you although things may get rough, you are never alone."
Not surprisingly, students expressed feelings of anxiety and deep concern while transitioning to a distance learning format and adjusting to the "new normal." In addition, students were troubled by not having the proper devices to complete their college studies for the remainder of the semester. They were appreciative of the College's efforts to secure and deliver laptops to students and staff in need.
Throughout this health crisis, the staff team has maintained constant contact with students to provide reassurance and guidance. Ms. Ceida Allen, EOP senior, is grateful for her EOP Counselor Mr. Gene Peters' guidance and the staff administrators' constant care and understanding. " ..there have been many times before and during this pandemic that I felt as if I wanted to quit. You never let me fold - because you all see my strength and endurance. I appreciate you all more than you know!"
In the uncertain times ahead we are all facing, EOP Students can breathe a collective sigh of relief, knowing EOP offers guiding hand when they meet obstacles or lose their way.
