Women in Science with Dr. Jennifer Cano, Stony Brook University

Probing the Quantum Universe: My Journey from Undergrad Researcher to Theoretical Physicist

Scientific research is a journey into the fundamental mysteries of the universe. This talk will discuss Dr. Cano's journey into the exotic universe of quantum materials, alongside her evolution from an undergrad researcher to a condensed matter theorist. Dr. Cano will discuss her key research findings on topological and two-dimensional materials. Beyond science, she will share her experience navigating a male-dominated field and building her identity as a physicist.

Dr. Jennifer Cano, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Stony Brook University

Dr. Jennifer Cano joined the faculty at Stony Brook in 2018. Prior to that, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science from 2015-2018. She received her PhD in 2015 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Jennifer received an NSF Career award in 2019 and a Sloan Fellowship in 2022.

Dr. Cano's research group focuses on the classification, prediction, and discovery of topological phases of matter. This can range from strongly correlated phases, such as the quantum Hall effect, to uncorrelated topological band structures. She is interested in classification, measurement, and materials discovery. Her research is funded by an NSF Early Career Award, the Columbia NSF MRSEC, the AFOSR, the Simons Foundation, and a Sloan Fellowship.
