Keynote Address: Inquiring Minds… Engage in SoTL

Teaching and learning are complex endeavors. The questions we might pose are endless. Will team-based learning deepen my students’ understanding? Will partnering with my students on my course design lead to more engaged learning? How can I provide the needed cycles of practice and feedback while also maintaining a reasonable load with respect to grading? Rather than relying on intuition, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning provides a systematic way to investigate and improve our teaching and students’ learning, and at the same time, contribute to the broader understanding of teaching and learning through presentations and publications. This plenary will introduce several SoTL frameworks for SoTL and share entry points that make it accessible for a wide range of practitioners.

Workshop: Inquiry to Implementation: Innovating with SoTL

SoTL researchers employ a wide variety of methods. This is not surprising given the range of disciplines, class sizes, course types, and individual lines of inquiry that comprise the field of SoTL. This flexibility makes SoTL accessible for any faculty who want to intertwine their teaching with research. Starting with their research question, participants of this working session will step through methodological considerations and explore dissemination options, which might also inform the development of their projects.
