Defiende La Verdad with National Association of Latino Elected Officials
NALEO Educational Fund is the nation’s leading non-profit, non-partisan organization that facilitates full Latino participation in the American political process, from citizenship to public service. The organization launched the Defiende La Verdad (DLV) campaign as part of its work promoting and facilitating Latinos’ participation in civic processes. The campaign was designed to counter misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation (MDM) efforts in the political process.
On November 14th, 2023, NALEO in collaboration with FSC Office of Community and Civic Engagement and other FSC participating student clubs will provide students with a civic education workshop led by NALEO representatives that will:
- Develop expertise on MDM and the skills to counter it: Attend trainings and presentations on the issue of MDM and recommended strategies for countering MDM.
- Participate in Defiende La Verdad’s Social Media monitoring program: Participants will monitor, track and report incidents of MDM identified on social media platforms. Volunteers will be trained in the mechanics of searching for MDM on social media and taught how to report it using our monitoring tool Junkipedia.
- Organize campus communities to counter MDM: Organize presentations by NALEO Educational Fund Staff on the issue of MDM and recruit members of the campus community to take part in social media monitoring sessions to help close the existing gap in monitoring for Spanish-language MDM content
