Bachelor of Science Degree

The Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Nutrition Science contains a strong scientific foundation that focuses on the interaction among dietary intake, metabolism, health, and chronic disease throughout the lifespan. Course topics include nutrient intake analysis, metabolism of nutrients, food science, biochemistry, promotion of healthy eating habits, weight management, and medical nutrition therapy. In addition, students develop the ability to work effectively within culturally diverse communities and to translate classroom learning into meaningful, real-world applications through community nutrition and field experiences. The Department of Nutrition Science and Wellness maintains strong mentoring relationships, and active peer collaboration. To accommodate students’ varying needs and schedules, courses are offered in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats throughout the fall, spring, and summer terms. 

Graduates are academically prepared for further professional studies of graduate school including dietetic, medical, dental, pharmacy, physician assistant and advanced studies in Nutrition Science.

Graduates interested in becoming a dietitian are eligible to search for entry into multiple accredited M.S. Dietetic programs on their own or utilize our associations with SUNY Oneonta, Long Island-C.W. Post, and University of Rhode Island/Sodexo programs.

Nutrition Science (BS) Program Outcomes:

• Graduates will demonstrate professional and personal ethics with a cultural awareness for dietary intake and skills in maintaining health and disease prevention throughout the life span (Professionalism/Leadership).
• Graduates will employ effective oral and written communication skills (Communication/Marketing).
• Graduates will apply critical thinking skills to evaluate, interpret, and analyze current issues in nutrition utilizing theoretically based problem solving skills (Critical Thinking).
• Graduates will be able to investigate, differentiate, and extrapolate nutrition science data and trends. This will allow them to excel in the nutrition sciences and to prepare for further professional and graduate education (Knowledge).
