BCS 303: XML

Students will learn the advanced concepts of Web site development using a language such as XML. XML is the Extensible Markup Language. It is designed to improve the functionality of the Web by providing more flexible and adaptable information identification. Students will be introduced to the basic programming concepts including creating an XML document, displaying an XML document, binding XML elements to HTML tags, working with the data source object, working with XSLT and XPath, declaring document elements, working with attribute types, working with namespaces, and schemas. Credits: 3.00 

Prerequisite

BCS 130 and a semester of a programming language, both with a grade C or better

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, students will:

  1. Create an XML document.
  2. Work with elements and attributes, using character references.
  3. Know how to work with CDATA sources.
  4. Use XML as a data source and bind XML elements to HTML tag and attributes.
  5. Work with multiple records.
  6. Transform XML with XSLT and XPath.
  7. Create entity references, general parsed entities, unparsed entities, and comments in a DTD.
  8. Validate standard vocabularies.
  9. Work with namespaces.
  10. Work with schema files including built-in and derived data types.
  11. Combine namespaces with schemas.
  12. Create functional programming applications.
  13. Apply reference keys and Muenchian Grouping to enhance file efficiency.
