BCS 300: Management Information Systems




BUS 109 or BUS 111 and Junior level standing

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the student will:

  1. Understand the strategic role of information systems and the organizational, managerial and industrial changes driving e-business, globalization and the emerging digital firm. 
  2. Explain the meaning of the terms used to describe the technological foundations and concepts of information systems, information technology, and business processes.  
  3. Describe the ways in which information systems are and will be used in business.  These concepts include electronic data interchange (EDI), the World Wide Web, production and supply chain management, enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management.  
  4. Understand the role of IS in capturing and distributing knowledge, including enhancing management decision making, knowledge management, and collaboration. 
  5. Identify managerial and organizational challenges stemming from development, implementation, and use of computer-based information systems. 
  6. Explain the major social and ethical issues involved in the development and use of information technology.
  7. Identify and explain the components of telecommunication systems and the use of wireless technology.
  8. Understand the issues of reliability, security, and control of information systems. 
  9. Realize information systems and information technology can be used as an agent of change for redesigning the organization.
  10. Research an information system as a project and experience working in teams.

At the end of this course, the student is required to research an information system that integrates technology with business processes.  


At least six (6) case studies will be assigned. A minimum of five (5) Hands-On MIS Projects will be assigned throughout the course.
