Women’s History Month- On March 8th, FSC celebrated Women’s History Month with the Phenomenal Womyn Awards.
This brunch event, held annually by the FSC Office of Student Activities, highlights
and celebrates women across campus for their accomplishments, including students and
staff. The event was held on International Women’s Day and opened with a presentation
by April Earle, Associate Librarian. April shared a history of women at FSC, including
FSC’s first woman alumna, Kathryn Freeman, class of 1919. Phenomenal Womyn Awards
were then presented to students and staff, including two FSC alumnae: Dr. Laura Joseph
’84, FSC’s Provost, and Sarina Turbendian ’14, Administrative Coordinator of the RAM
Program. Congratulations to all who were honored!
Student Activities, Greenley Library, the Alumni Association and the Office of Diversity,
Equity and Inclusive Excellence have organized events and social media features throughout
the month of March.
Health Sciences Panel Discussion- Thanks to the Alumni Association which, in partnership with the School of Health
Sciences, hosted a virtual faculty panel discussion to address “Optimizing Your Health
in a Post-Pandemic World.” The panel discussion, moderated by Chair of the Nutrition
Science and Health Promotion Wellness Department, Dr. Jack Thomas, featured faculty
members Dr. Derek Hanson, Dr. Christine Freaney, and Dr. Jill Silverman. Topics discussed
were intuitive eating as well as mental health and physical activity post pandemic.
If you missed it you can find a recording of the discussion here.
Admitted Student Day- A very big thank you to all who participated in our recent Admitted Student Day.
Enrollment Services relocated and reimagined the event with great results. We received
very favorable feedback from both the faculty/staff participants and from students
and families. Change is not always easy so it’s very nice to see so many people embracing
a change for the better.
Ram Run- Feel free to register for the annual Ram Run to be held next Sunday, April 3 at 9am. Not a runner? No problem. You are most welcome
to join and walk the certified course which begins and ends at the Nold Athletic Complex
track. There’s even a free children’s event. This tradition has been successful thanks
to the work of the Alumni Association.
Mar-Comm Awards-The Office of Marketing & Communications earned high honors in the 37th Annual Educational
Advertising Awards competition. Four of the seven winning projects took Gold, with
top honors awarded for the “2021 President's Gala Video,” the “Top Six Ways FSC is
Keeping You Safe Video,” the “Class of 2026 Digital Backgrounds,” and the “FSC Acceptance
Package.” Congratulations!
Metrics That Matter- You may have noticed the addition of Metrics That Matter to our home page. We highlight
some of our key accomplishments—some of which are used in our promotions and publications.
The College has numerous points of pride that are not captured in college rankings
but are nonetheless important to our students, faculty and staff. Check these out
at Farmingdale Metrics That Matter.
Capital Project Update- As I am sure you have noticed, we have many capital projects currently underway
across the campus. At this point, $250M of projects are in some stage of development.
This reflects both the acuity of need and the confidence that the State University
Construction Fund has in the College. Several initiatives are underway or just beginning
and we expect this trend to continue over the next few years. Currently efforts are
focused on the renovation of Roosevelt, the first floor of Knapp, the roof and windows
in Lupton as well as designs for Laffin, Thompson, and Sinclair. Execution of these
may be disruptive at times, but the result will be a revitalized campus with improved
buildings, grounds and facilities. I want to acknowledge our construction and project
management staff who are working tirelessly to manage this impressive portfolio of
projects.
Spring Commencement- We are planning two spring graduation exercises. A ceremony will be held at 7:00pm
on Wednesday, May 25 Nold Hall for graduates from Spring 2020, Winter 2020, Spring
2021 and Winter 2021. We were unable to have traditional commencement ceremonies for
these classes. On Thursday, May 26 at 10:00am we will hold an outdoor ceremony at
the Nold track for our Spring 2022 graduates. We are thrilled that our commencement
speaker for the Thursday event will be Rushi Kota ’09 who, after graduation from FSC,
pursued a successful acting career. You can read more about him in our recent Alumni Spotlight. Thanks to our Commencement Committee for taking the necessary steps to hold these
two ceremonies on separate days. This is an enormous undertaking.
