Sabbatical & Reduced Load—Deadlines for Fall 2027 Applications
Sent on behalf of the Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee
To Full-Time Faculty:
The application process for requesting sabbaticals or release time from teaching or
other professional responsibilities to pursue scholarly activity is outlined below.
According to the Policies of the Board of Trustees, applications for sabbatical leaves
must be submitted to the chief administrative officer as far in advance as possible.
The Standing Committee on Sabbaticals and Reduced Loads reviews all applications before
forwarding its recommendations to the Provost and the President.
As stated in the Professional Handbook, before applying for a sabbatical, a faculty
member must meet the minimum requirements set forth by the Board of Trustees. First,
they must have been granted continuing appointment by the SUNY Chancellor. The College
recognizes that a faculty member is notified one year prior to continuing appointment
of the College’s decision to recommend the faculty member for continuing appointment.
However, continuing appointment is not official until the faculty member receives
the Chancellor’s letter. Therefore, a faculty member may not apply for a sabbatical
until this letter has been received.
In addition, the faculty member must have completed six consecutive years of service
within the SUNY system. Faculty who are granted prior service credit may only count
service from another SUNY institution toward the six-year requirement. A complete
listing of eligible institutions is available on the SUNY System Campus List webpage. If a faculty member receives prior service credit from a non-SUNY institution, that
service may not be applied toward sabbatical eligibility.
Applications for a sabbatical or reduced load must be submitted one year prior to
the requested term. Therefore, the deadline for fall 2027 sabbatical and reduced load requests is Friday, October 16, 2026.
Sabbatical and reduced load application forms are now available in Axiom Mentor >
Applications > Institutional Applications > Sabbatical and Reduced Load.
The process timeline is listed below:
- Candidate submits application by October 16, 2026.
- Chair submits recommendation by October 30, 2026.
- Dean submits recommendation by November 13, 2026.
- Sabbatical and Reduced Load Committee submits recommendations to the Provost by December 4, 2026.
