Drug and Alcohol Education - Policies and Procedures
To FSC Students:
In accordance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, this
notification is being sent to all Farmingdale State College (FSC) students. FSC is
an institution committed to promoting the physical, intellectual, and social development
of all individuals. As such, FSC seeks to prevent the abuse of drugs and alcohol,
which can adversely impact performance and threaten the health and safety of students,
employees, their families, and the general public. FSC complies with all federal,
state, and local laws concerning the unlawful possession, use, and distribution of
drugs and alcohol. Federal law requires that FSC adopt and implement a program to
prevent the use of illicit drugs and abuse of alcohol by students and employees. FSC
provides information on possible criminal sanctions, health risks, and resources associated
with drug and alcohol use in the Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy.
Standards of Conduct and Disciplinary Sanctions
The FSC Student Code of Conduct outlines standards for FSC students and disciplinary sanctions for violating the
Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy. Consistent with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities
Act Amendments of 1989 (Public Law 101-226), students are prohibited from possessing,
using, or distributing a controlled substance or dangerous drug, or any drug unlawful
to possess, e.g. cannabis, except as expressly permitted by law.
Legal Risks Related to Alcohol and Other Drugs
The chart found here provides a general overview of the legal risks associated with alcohol and other
drugs in Suffolk County and New York State. These risks can vary depending on the
substance, a person’s age, the amount involved, whether driving is involved, and whether
the substance is possessed, shared, sold, or used in a restricted setting. This chart
is not an exhaustive list and may not include every substance, law, or possible legal
consequence. It is intended as an educational resource to help students understand
potential legal consequences and should not be considered legal advice.
Health Risks
The Health and Wellness Center provides information on Health Risks of Alcohol and Other Drugs & Additional External Resources.
Available Resources
Campus Mental Health Services offers Substance Education, Prevention, and Outreach, and is available to all FSC students. A staff of psychologists, counselors, and
social workers are available to assist with personal issues or problems students may
experience during their academic years. Emergency consultations and referrals to outside
services are also provided. All services are free and confidential. No information
is released without student consent.
Appointments for services may be made online, in person by visiting Dewey Hall, or by phone at 934.420.2006. More information
about Campus Mental Health Services can also be obtained through email at cmhs@farmingdale.edu.
Because the use of drugs or alcohol may be life-threatening, FSC wishes to reduce
barriers to seeking and receiving medical help. FSC also encourages students under
the influence of drugs and/or alcohol who may be the victims of, witnesses to, or
otherwise become aware of violence (including but not limited to domestic violence,
dating violence, stalking, or sexual assault), sexual harassment, or gender-based
harassment to report that violence or harassment. Therefore, students who seek medical
assistance either for themselves or others, and/or are reporting violence or harassment,
will not be subject to discipline under the circumstances described in FSC’s Student
Amnesty Policy found within the Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy.
