Dear Farmingdale State College Juniors:
Farmingdale State College invites eligible juniors to apply for the Benjamin and David Scharps Legal Essay Competition, a prestigious opportunity for students with an interest in legal issues or who are
considering a future career in the legal field. This annual competition is offered
in accordance with a gift accepted by the State University of New York Board of Trustees
under the will of Hannah S. Hirschhorn, establishing the Benjamin and David Scharps
Memorial Fund.
This year’s competition centers on legal possession of property. Applicants are asked
to submit a 2,000-word essay that examines the role and relevance of law in addressing
a current legal issue related to this topic. Additional details regarding the essay
topic, awards, eligibility, and submission parameters can be found on the webpage.
The submission deadline is Friday, January 23, 2026, by 12 p.m. (Late submissions will not be accepted.) Essays must be submitted via email to: Professor Michael Motta at mottam@farmingdale.edu.
Farmingdale State College will select the top three submissions to represent the College in the overall competition. Competition winners will be
announced in March 2026.
Students with an interest in law, justice, or public policy are strongly encouraged
to apply. This is an excellent opportunity to engage deeply with a timely legal issue
while competing for a significant academic award. For more information, please contact
