Civic Learning and Engagement
To Faculty:
SUNY is committed to civic engagement as an essential outcome of higher education.
As part of this commitment, this past spring 10 faculty and staff from SUNY campuses
were selected as Civic Education and Engagement and Civil Discourse Fellows.
To support campuses, the Fellows invite all members of the SUNY community to join
them in systemwide conversations about the meaning and importance of civic education
and engagement. Starting in September there will be six online events as part of the SUNY Civic Learning and Civic Engagement Fall 2024 Online Series.
- “Hot Moments in the Classroom: Keeping the Temperature Comfortable”
- “Virtual Dialogue: Our Freedom of Speech + the Perils of Misinformation”
- “Case Study: Course Development using AI and Civic Discourse”
- “STEM Education IS Civic Education”
- “Artificial Intelligence and Technology Effects on Politics and Civic Engagement”
- “The Highway that Racism Built”
These events cross disciplinary boundaries and are offered by Fellows from a range
of SUNY institutions. All members of the SUNY community are encouraged to join one
or more of these events to exchange ideas and learn from each other. More information
and the registration link are available here.
Additionally, to offer support to those interested in learning more about civic education
and engagement, the Fellows have developed the SUNY Civic Fellows webpage. This webpage has information about the Fellows, a link to the SUNY Civic Learning
and Civic Engagement Fall 2024 Online Series, and resources within the following topics:
- Curriculum, Teaching, Programming, and Assessment
- Student Activities
- Campus Governance and Policies
- Scholarship and Research
