First Year Experience
Dear Colleagues,
Beginning in the fall of 2023, Farmingdale State College will launch our new General
Education Framework in alignment with the State University of New York’s requirements.
This new framework will apply to all first-time, full-time students.
In addition, the college has determined that a First Year Experience course will be required of all incoming students to support them during their transitional
year and share with them our expectations regarding conversations related to Diversity,
Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice. The course will set the tone for what it means
to be a Farmingdale State College community member.
Dr. Marya Howell-Carter will serve as the Acting FYE Coordinator, working closely with Dr. Marla Jorgensen to schedule courses, assign and hire faculty,
train faculty and ensure consistency in course delivery to meet intended outcomes.
As a first step in launching this course, the requirement will only apply to students
in programs within the School of Arts and Sciences. Beginning in the fall of 2024,
all incoming students will be required to take the course. DegreeWorks will be modified for each curriculum to include this additional one-credit
course.
Faculty interested in teaching this course should inform their department chair by
February 17, 2023. Each course is one (1) credit and can count toward load or be used for extra service. The maximum amount of extra service would be three (3) credits. Department chairs will need to submit their faculty’s interest through this link:
https://farmingdale.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9oDo9v7LqpcJrn0 by February 20, 2023.
If you have any questions regarding the FYE course, please reach out to Dr. Marya
Howell-Carter at x2725 or carterm@farmingdale.edu, or Dr. Marla Jorgensen at x2656 or jorgenmf@farmingdale.edu.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued support in helping
our students reach their full potential.
Best regards,
Laura Joseph, EdD
Senior Vice President and Provost
