Message from the Provost: Spring 2023
January 25, 2023
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a restful break and your spring semester is off to a good start. This
message is to provide you with a few updates regarding remote office hours and funding
opportunities. I also included information regarding the upcoming Faculty Center
Conference and encourage you to register using the link below, if you have not yet
registered.
Remote Office Hours
As part of the full-time faculty members’ professional obligation, a minimum of five
(50 minute) office hours must be held across three days. For the fall 2022 term,
it was decided to pilot the utilization of remote office hours. This pilot program
will continue into the spring term and be reviewed prior to the start of the fall
2023 semester.
The pilot program for remote office hours allows for 2 of the 5 required hours (50 minutes) to be conducted off-campus using virtual conferencing. The remaining three hours must be conducted on campus either in-person or virtually.
Keep in mind that faculty office hours allow for collaboration among colleagues;
therefore, office hour schedules should reflect a minimum of two days on campus during normal
college hours of operation. Office hours may not be scheduled during the activity hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Office hours schedules are to be submitted to the department chair and clearly stated
on the faculty member’s course syllabi with appropriate contact information.
Professional Development Funding
Funding is available through the Provost’s Office to support faculty growth and development.
Full-time faculty are invited to apply to receive funding to support conference attendance,
professional training, and other activities that lead to enhancement. Applications,
submitted through Axiom Mentor, will be reviewed by the school dean and department
chair on a triennial basis: October, February, and April.
- Applications must be completed and submitted before the 15th of the intended triennial
review period (October 15, February 15, and April 15)
- One professional development activity can be requested per application
- Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received PD support funds
from this funding source
- All proposed professional development activities must occur AFTER the intended review
period
- The maximum amount of funding through this application for the academic year is $3,000
per individual. Please be aware that funds are limited; therefore, some applications
may be denied or not fully supported.
When completing the application in AXIOM, you MUST click “Application is Complete”
to process the application. The “Application is Complete” button becomes available
when all the required contents are uploaded or filled out on the application. Should
you need any technical assistance with the process in Axiom, please reach out to Justin
Dolce, the Academic Project Coordinator at dolcejs@farmingdale.edu or 934-420-2344.
Summer Scholarship Support
Summer Scholarship support is another funding opportunity that has been approved for
2023! As in the past, am pleased to offer full-time, tenured, and tenure-track faculty
the opportunity to have a scholarly activity funded by the College. I urge those
of you interested to apply as soon as possible. Priority will be given to untenured
faculty. The application process begins in Axiom Mentor under Applications → Institutional
Applications →Summer Scholarship Support.
Applications will close at the end of the day on Friday, February 17, 2023.
Should you have any questions related to the Summer Scholarship Support program, please
contact your chair or dean. If you need technical assistance with Axiom Mentor, please
reach out to Justin Dolce, Academic Program Coordinator, at dolcejs@farmingdale.edu.
12th Annual Faculty Center Conference
As a reminder, I encourage you to attend the workshop entitled “The Art of Teaching
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice” with the Keynote speaker Dr. Sheldon
Eakins on February 17, 2023 from 9:30am to 3:00pm in the Campus Center Ballroom. This important program will be delivered both online and face-to-face and will help
you understand the value and impact of addressing your biases to teach through a culturally
diverse lens. For more information, please visit the 12th Annual Faculty Center Conference site.
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Best wishes for a successful spring term,
Laura Joseph, EdD
