DEISJ Course Designation Application
September 7, 2022
Dear Colleagues,
As many of you know, SUNY System has developed a new General Education Framework that
incorporates knowledge and skills related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social
Justice (DEISJ). This new framework will be required for all first-time/full-time
students beginning in the fall of 2023.
Through the outstanding work of the DEISJ Working Group, students will be able to
fulfill DEISJ requirements at Farmingdale State College by taking specially designed
DEISJ courses that have been developed by faculty and approved by the DEISJ Review
Board. DEISJ-approved courses will be labeled with a “D” designation in Banner as
fulfilling this requirement and tracked through Degree Works.
Courses for ‘D’ Designation
Submission of courses for designation as ‘D,’ Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social
Justice (DEISJ) will be accepted in the 2022-2023 academic year. DEISJ applications
will be submitted to the DEISJ Review Board through Axiom Mentor. All courses that
receive the ‘D’ designation must be taught by an Instructor that has completed DEISJ
Faculty Certification Training at FSC.
To submit an application, log into Axiom Mentor through My FSC:
- Select the Applications Tab.
- Click on the Submissions Tab.
- On the Submission screen, look for the DEISJ category. Select DEISJ 2022-23
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. However, courses must be submitted
by October 7 for the Fall 2023 schedule. There will be training sessions to assist the Deans and
Chairperson(s) with developing course outcomes and assessments to meet DEISJ requirements.
Those sessions will be offered:
DEISJ Outcomes September 16, 1-2 p.m. (online)
DEISJ Outcomes September 19, 3:30-4:30 p.m. (in person)
DEISJ Assessments September 23, 1-2 p.m. (online)
DEISJ Assessments September 26, 3:30-4:30 p.m. (in person)
Faculty Certification
To become a DEISJ certified Instructor, one must complete a 4-week asynchronous training
course. If the instructor is taking the certification course while simultaneously
teaching a DEISJ course, the instructor must complete all training certification course
requirements by the semester's midpoint. FSC’s DEISJ training certification course
will be offered three times a year: (1) Fall semester, (2) Spring semester, and (3)
Summer, as outlined below.
- If an instructor starts the certification training course and does not complete it
within that semester, the instructor will be required to start the course from the
first week if enrolled again.
- If a training course is taken while teaching a DEISJ course and is not completed,
that instructor may not teach another DEISJ course until certification is completed.
The first DEISJ Faculty Certification Training will start on October 24 and run through November 20. The next faculty certification training will be held in Spring 2023, early in the
semester. To register or for more information regarding the Faculty Certification
Training please visit the Faculty Center page or contact Jennifer A. Jaiswal at jaiswaja@farmingdale.edu.
Please join me in thanking the working group for putting in place an operational plan
to meet this requirement; Alicia Cesar (co-Chair), Evan Cooper, Justin Dolce, Christine
Freaney (co-chair), Jeff Hung, Jennifer Jaiswal, Angela Jones, Kevin Jordan, Margarita
