Faith and Reflection
Building a faith community: A Call to “Faithful” Discipleship
There are thousands of recognized religions in the world. These systems of belief
consist of churches, congregations, groups, tribes, cultures, and movements. The reflective
nature of the various faiths that are practiced encourages self-discipline, self-control,
sacrifice, empathy, and the common realization that as part of humanity we exist not
only for ourselves, but others as well.
Unfortunately, we are living through challenging times of injustice and a demonstrative
show of wanton incivility. For me, critical and introspective reflection is the starting
point of change. The act of reflection invites us to move toward the praxis of humanness
as our humanity is what binds us together. One need not be of a particular religion
to appreciate becoming a devotee of reflection. Being a devotee of reflection does
not coerce an individual to adhere to a system of dogma or doctrine, but in my opinion,
invites us to demonstrate our commitment to the belief that fundamentally the good
in humanity outweighs the bad, there is more that connects us than separates us, and
through our collective action can address the acts of depredation that haunt us. Reflection,
to paraphrase the Danish philosopher, Kierkegaard, is an opportunity to understand
life backward; but live it forward.
As I contemplate and live my life forward, mindfulness dictates that my reflection
must be transformed into action. Therefore, I am solely accountable for exercising
my belief in compassion, empathy, integrity, courage, love, and the list goes on.
Farmingdale State College as a multicultural community provides an opportunity to
showcase our collective faith in power of humanity. I’m wondering, how many readers
of my humble thoughts will join me in a period of reflection that we may be encouraged
to become a “faithful” disciple! Here’s to making this world a better host for all
humanity…
I remain a proud disciple,
